Importing from CSV¶
The import is a four-step wizard: upload, map columns, preview, then confirm. Nothing is imported until the final step, so you can back out at any point.
1. Upload¶
Choose Upload specification on the simulation page, pick your file, and choose Upload.
Your file is read but nothing is imported yet.
Use the template if you are starting from scratch
A template CSV is linked on the upload screen, already in the shape we expect. Exporting from your existing inventory tool and mapping the columns is usually faster than filling the template in by hand.
2. Map your columns¶
Every row on this screen is a field we understand. The dropdown beside it is the column from your file that we think matches.
We detect vendor, model, CPU and memory fields automatically where we can. The summary tells you how many we matched and how many still need you.
Fields marked Required in red must be mapped before you can continue. Everything else is optional and only adds detail to the results — but the more you map, the more precise the analysis.
Change any dropdown that looks wrong.
3. Preview¶
Your first few rows, arranged the way we have understood them.
This is the moment to spot a column that has landed in the wrong place. If these rows read correctly, the rest will too.
4. Confirm¶
Choose Import. The rows come in and each is matched against the hardware catalogue.
You are returned to the simulation, where anything we were unsure about is flagged for you to confirm. See Specifications.
File requirements¶
- Format: CSV.
- A header row naming the columns.
- One row per server configuration.
- Uploads are limited to 10 MB. If your file is larger, split it and import in parts — the lines accumulate on the specification.
Common problems¶
| What you see | Usually means |
|---|---|
| Columns detected but all unmapped | The header row is missing, or is not the first row |
| Every row flagged after import | Vendor and model landed in the wrong columns — check the preview |
| Rows silently missing | Blank lines or a trailing separator row in the file |
| Upload refused | The file is over 10 MB, or is not a CSV |
